African Americans in Philanthropy Must Stimulate the Status Quo
Read and watch the report...
-- ABFE President Susan Taylor Batten outlined goals for ABFE with one overall outcome: that people in philanthropy will know about the issues of black communities.
-- Wenda Weekes Moore, ABFE Board Member and Trustee of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, said..."This is an exciting time to be in philanthropy as it relates to African Americans"
-- Phillip Thomas, ABFE Board Member and Senior Program Officer at Chicago Community Trust, explains the importance of Blacks in Philanthropy groups (BIPs) around the country.
-- Chad Jones, ABFE Connecting Leaders Fellow (2007-2008), discusses how ABFE is promoting a diversity pipeline and how the fellowship has impacted his career.
-- Towalame Austin, ABFE Member and President of the Magic Johnson Foundation, talks about the importance of being connected to other Black leaders in philanthropy.
Call to Black Philanthropy: The Future is in Our Hands
Gladys Washington, ABFE Board Member and Senior Program Officer at the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation framed the discussion well as she introduced ABFE's luncheon keynote speaker John H. Jackson. "Having the conversation in a southern city was fitting considering that most African Americans live in the south, the most poverty is in the south, highest incarceration rates are in the south."
Dr. John H. Jackson, New ABFE Board Member and President and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education, talked about the critical correlation between educational attainment, incarceration economics, etc. We can see by race and ethnicity who's more likely to end up in jail. How do we identify the social policies that are leading to these disparate, unnatural results? We have to ask the question, why have we won some battles, but are still losing the war. We have the first African American President, but only 47% of Black males are graduating from high school. This is our challenge.
