ABFE Presents Its 2009 Annual Program
Change in Generational Leadership:
Past, Present and the Future of Philanthropy
May 2nd through 3rd, 2009
Atlanta, Georgia
Seating is Limited. Online Registration is NOW Available!
ABFE's 2009 Annual Meeting comes at an historic time in this country. Foremost is the presence of new leadership in the presidency - leadership that represents an agenda of change. We know that leadership matters and our 2009 program at the Council of Foundations' Conference is designed to celebrate the critical connections between change and leadership transfer in a number of ways:
• We will take the time to honor the leaders who were instrumental in the founding and creation of ABFE;
• Our eighteenth James A. Joseph Lecturer will deliver a firsthand account of her recent experience of leadership transition and the critical progression that all organizations, movements, ideas and projects eventually experience and how current leaders can pave the way for new leaders to facilitate change;
• Our sessions will highlight some of the "best and brightest" of the next generation;
• We will share the new and fresh perspectives for ABFE from our new President, Susan Taylor Batten.
Hard questions and choices are before us - how will Black communities fare during the current economic crisis? How do we position ourselves to be as strategic as possible using the influence, resources and power of philanthropy? And how do we ensure that there is a new generation of Blacks in philanthropy that can carry ABFE's mission forward to respond to these issues?
Join us and be a part of the solution!

ABFE 2009 Luncheon: Providing our Children an Opportunity to Learn
Marriott Marquis
Featured Speaker: Dr. John H. Jackson, President and CEO, The Schott Foundation for Public Education.
According to the Schott Foundation's report, Given Half A Chance: The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males, "Over-classification as mentally retarded, under-classification as gifted/talented, under-representation in advanced placement classes, and disproportionate out-of-school suspensions and expulsions combine to limit educational opportunities and reduce achievement levels for Black students, particularly Black male students."
Join us for lunch and a discussion led by Dr. Jackson, who served on the Obama-Biden transition team, and learn more about the critical issues facing the education of Black children and young adults; highlights of the President's education reform agenda and the goals and design of a major philanthropic initiative to address these issues; also, opportunities to join the movement.
4:00PM to 6:00PM

Update on Philanthropic Efforts to Improve the Lives of Black Men and Boys and Special Screening: Bring Your A Game
Morehouse College
ABFE is one of many leaders in the field participating in a broad movement to direct more philanthropic dollars to Black men and boys as well as other males of color. In the forefront of these efforts is the Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF)'s multi-site Black Men and Boys Initiative. This session will provide an update on activities in the field and share 21CF's new documentary, Bring Your "A" Game, a film targeted to urban youth who are most vulnerable to poverty and lack male role models to encourage them to play a game that doesn't naturally include them. To generate a national conversation on the plight of Black men and boys, 21CF partnered with actor-director Mario Van Peebles to create a documentary film that, in Van Peebles' words, "sheds light on the resilience and influence of Black males." As a result of this session, participants will have an increased understanding of the philanthropic efforts underway to address issues facing Black males and identified strategies and opportunities for using this new documentary in their communities and place-based grant-making efforts. Session attendees will learn how to obtain a complimentary copy of the film for their work on these issues around the country.
