James A. Joseph Lectures & Awards

Congratulations to our 2010 James A. Joseph Lecturer on Philanthropy, Crystal Hayling, and our 2010 Emerging Leader in Philanthropy Recipient, Cedric Brown

Ms. Hayling delivered her dynamic lecture, 5 Things We Know, But Keep Forgetting, to a packed room at ABFE's Annual Conference in Denver.  Take a moment and read and absorb her timely and relevant thoughts.

ABFE President Susan Taylor Batten recognized the work of Open Society Institute's Campaign for Black Male Achievement with the President's 2010 Special Recognition.  (Note: for the evening's program ABFE Board Member Gladys Washington and  Board Chair, Dwayne Proctor, served in absence of Ms. Batten).

The Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA) is a multi-issue, cross-fund strategy to address Black men and boys' exclusion from economic, social, educational, and political life in the United States.  The Campaign responds to a growing body of research that reveals the intensification of black males' negative life outcomes, which align with ABFE’s own emphasis on promoting effective and responsive philanthropy in Black communities.

Mr. rashid shabazz (L, photo), Program Officer, accepted the recognition on behalf of the CBMA team.

Mr. Cedric Brown (R, photo), Director of the Mitchell Kapor Foundation, is ABFE's seventh Emerging Leader in Philanthropy Award recipient.

ABFE thanks our sponsors, volunteers, The Denver Foundation and Colorado Blacks in Philanthropy (COBIP) for helping to make possible this year's Annual Conference.

2011 will mark ABFE's 40th Anniversary.  Please join us next year for this milestone celebration in philanthropy.

The James A. Joseph Lecture on Philanthropy is a tribute to Ambassador James A. Joseph, ABFE co-founder and distinguished leader in the field of philanthropy. The Lecture recognizes an outstanding individual whose leadership and contributions as a visionary philanthropic leader have helped advance progressive philanthropic ideals, strengthen grantmaking institutions and build vital Black communities.

The Emerging Leader in Philanthropy Award
recognizes an outstanding individual whose innovative leadership promotes philanthropy as a means of social change in Black communities and advances ABFE's mission. The ABFE Emerging Leader in Philanthropy Award is presented during the ABFE James Joseph Lecture in Philanthropy held each year at the Council on Foundations Annual Meeting.

ABFE President's Recognition acknowledges and uplifts those who are doing outstanding work in the field on behalf of Black communities.
