Position Overview
The Director of Development is part of WildCare’s senior team reporting to the Executive Director (ED). In partnership with the ED, Board of Directors and a small Development team, the Director of Development will be directly responsible for continuing to advance comprehensive fundraising strategies. The Director of Development will lead fund development efforts designed to increase the base of contributed income beyond FY2015 goals of $2.7 million.

The Director of Development will research and target strategic giving opportunities, including planned giving for donors who are inspired by the WildCare mission and engaged in supporting the organization. In partnership with the ED and Board, the Director of Development will plan, cultivate, solicit and steward existing and prospective donors to increase the number and level of gifts from individuals, from major donors and income from foundations and corporations.

The DOD will capitalize on the opportunity of WildCare’s new facility and capital campaign, and, motivating an energetic and resourceful team, build WildCare’s fundraising capacity to ensure successful achievement of contributed income goals.


In collaboration with the ED and supervising a small Development team –Create and execute a comprehensive strategic fund development plan designed to increase annual contributed income, including gifts from individuals, direct mail and online appeals, grants, sponsorships, major donor programs, planned giving, and special events.

Expand WildCare’s donor base, cultivating and advancing donors and obtaining gift commitments, and managing a comprehensive stewardship program to guarantee timely donor appreciation.

Build and maintain relationships with major donors: manage a portfolio of existing and prospective donors; create cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies, and engage key staff and Board as appropriate in each donor relationship. Coordinate meetings for the ED, who will also be a primary contact for major donors.

Plan and implement strategies that support continued progress and achievement of current $10 million capital campaign.

Work with Annual Fund Manager to write and manage annual appeals and online solicitations. Ensure timely production and fulfillment of appeals, including list segmentation, design, printing, mail production, content up-loads, etc. Engage and provide direction to vendors such as graphic designers, printers, mail house, and webmaster as necessary. Oversee the development and execution of current annual and new fundraising and stewardship events such as WildCare’s Annual Fall Gala, Dining for Wildlife, and the Terwilliger Environmental Award.

Coordinate with Communications Director for fund development electronic and print communications; these include regular newsletters, social media networking, event announcements, etc., and surveys to measure and evaluate the impact and outcomes of fundraising efforts.Build a culture for philanthropy, internally and externally, that will attract staff, Board members and donors to the organization and inspire excellence in donor relations and fundraising.

Engage and support members of the Board in fundraising activities. Provide Board members with the tools, knowledge and personal interaction to become active partners in achieving development goals.

Manage and motivate a small team to successfully achieve fundraising goals. Oversee daily operations of development inspiring ownership and accountability for all involved.

Supervise regularly administration of the donor database to ensure high integrity of data collection, accuracy of information, gift entry, donor activity, issuance of gift acknowledgments, and reports that inform and prioritize fundraising activities and solicitations.

Regularly evaluate internal systems, policies and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness. Ensure compliance with all relevant policies and regulations set forth by the IRS, Board and ED.


Proven experience executing comprehensive strategic fund development plans for nonprofit organizations; demonstrated success in a variety of fundraising activities and in achieving goals. Experience raising funds for animal/environmental welfare organizations preferred.

A positive record in soliciting major gifts from individuals, and in qualifying for grants and sponsorships through government sources, foundations and corporations.

Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to develop and articulate compelling case statements, grant proposals, and other key fundraising communications that further WildCare’s abilities to achieve its mission.

A successful background as a member of a leadership team, and the ability to relate effectively and develop positive relationships with a broad range of organizational stakeholders, including Board, donors, staff, volunteers, etc.; skill in working harmoniously with many personalities.

Strong nonprofit financial acumen; ability to create and effectively track and report on an annual department budget, and to accurately monitor, report and evaluate restricted and unrestricted gifts and grant monies.

Current knowledge of legal and tax issues applicable to a wide variety of fundraising practices available to individual and corporate donors. Knowledge of principles, procedures, ethics, regulations, and standards as applied to fundraising.

A strategic thinker with the ability to plan ahead while also effectively managing operational details and executing daily fundraising and management duties successfully in a fast-paced environment.

A proactive communicator, collaborator, and problem-solver with an orientation toward goal attainment and leadership.

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Filemaker Pro, Convio, RaisersEdge, Luminate, WealthEngine, and/or other fundraising software and database management systems; ability to effectively use database for donor research and analysis.

Position Overview
Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Extended Learning Officer
(Temporary 18-month position)

This is a grant funded position supporting the More and Better Learning Time Initiative (MBLTI), a multi-year investment by the Ford Foundation in the development of high-quality and cost-effective expanded learning opportunities for public schools’ students. The Hartford Foundation has partnered with the National Center for Time and Learning (NCTL), Connecticut State Department of Education, United Way of Wallingford and Meriden, and others to bring more and better learning opportunities to three of Connecticut’s Alliance Districts – school districts with the lowest district performance index scores statewide. Efforts currently are underway, in East Hartford, Meriden and New London, to extend the school day and/or year by a minimum of 300 hours. This system-building involves rethinking curriculum and instructional practices, developing new community partnerships, and increasing parent engagement to support expanded and enriched learning time.

Responsibilities of this position include:
•Research and analysis of local, state and federal policy and funding streams that support or pose barriers to high-quality expanded learning time and partnership between schools districts, schools and community based organizations to provide high-quality expanded learning opportunities; publish whitepapers highlighting findings
•Partnership and capacity building among schools, school districts and their partners engaged in system building to increase or improve quality of expanded learning opportunities
•Coordination of knowledge building opportunities for schools, school districts and their partners, including convenings, training and technical assistance to schools and community based organizations
•Providing staff support to the Connecticut Expanded Learning Time Collaborative, including meeting planning and agenda development, as well as identifying knowledge building opportunities and new partners
•Providing administrative support in planning and implementing expanded learning time communications
•Providing grants management support for the Hartford Foundation’s grant from the Ford Foundation through December 31, 2016, including ensuring payments and monitoring progress for grants to Wallingford-Meriden United Way

Requirements for this position include:
•Deep commitment to the issues of educational equity and opportunity
•A passion for the work involved , proven mastery of a significant body of related knowledge, along with a portfolio of proven accomplishments
•5+ years’ experience conducting research and analysis of educational issues and educational policy, preferably related to expanded learning

Position Overview
Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Seeks Grants Operations Manager

Leading Grantmaking Operations at the Hartford Foundation is an opportunity to make a positive difference in our community by ensuring that all grant applications, awards, monitoring of results, processing of payments and record keeping are efficient, accurate, and in compliance with Foundation policies and protocols and IRS regulations.

In this role, you will also develop annual budgets and regular forecasts for grantmaking for more than 1,000 grants from 1,300 funds each year, provide standard and special reports and analysis of grantmaking data and trends for Foundation board, management and staff.

In this position, you will be a key member of the Community Investments management team, responsible for supporting the work of the Foundation by:

•Developing and monitoring annual grantmaking budgets, reporting spending to Board, management and staff regularly and providing information, analyses, and counsel to department management on current and historical trends, and potential future opportunities and challenges related to grantmaking
•Selecting, developing and providing performance feedback and recommendations for recognition for assigned staff; providing guidance and support for their work by ensuring that staff have adequate resources and cooperation of others as required to accomplish goals and provide exceptional service to the Foundation and grantees
•Leading the development, implementation and maintenance of grantmaking processes and procedures in compliance with field’s best practices and regulatory requirements
•Serving as an expert user and trainer for FIMS database, ensuring that the system provides data and both routine and special reports which are timely, accurate and useful
•Ensuring that restricted funds are properly identified and utilized to complement unrestricted funds available for grants
•Advising staff on grantmaking policies and procedures and assisting staff in understanding Foundation-wide operations and systems
•Approving grantee reports and payment requests in compliance with grantmaking protocols
•Responding to grantee inquiries on Foundation grant policies and practices

Requirements for this position include:
•Minimum 10 years’ experience managing financial/accounting operations in complex nonprofit organizations, with demonstrated skills in data base management and data analysis
•Proven ability to communicate clearly to a wide to a wide variety of audiences to ensure understanding and compliance with grantmaking procedures
•Knowledge of management and grantmaking best practices
•Demonstrated ability to form and lead teams to accomplish high quality work on time to advance organizational priorities
•Working knowledge of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector
•Demonstrated ability to accomplish continuous improvement goals and to generate cooperation from others for doing so
•Track record of consistently acquiring new knowledge and skills to enhance performance
