Erikson Institute, one of the first organizations in the country to focus on the importance of child development, seeks a Vice President for Advancement to lead its development operation to new levels of attainment. Currently celebrating its 50th year, Erikson’s enduring mission and passion to serve young children, families and communities is energized through new strategies that deepen its impact and influence in the complex and ever-changing early childhood arena. Erikson’s broadening commitment is evidenced through distinctive work in education, applied research, direct service programs and advocacy.
Founded in 1966, Erikson has been recognized for groundbreaking contributions in child development and is the home of the nation’s premier institution of higher education committed to ensuring that all children have equitable opportunities to realize their potential. From its campus in downtown Chicago and through distance learning, Erikson offers the most comprehensive interdisciplinary understanding of child development available through master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs.
The Vice President for Advancement (VPA) is responsible for an integrated program of fundraising and alumni relations focused on the generation of both annual and capital support of Erikson. In particular, the VPA will sustain the significant level of corporate and foundation support while identifying opportunities to increase participation and support from individual donors. The VPA will also work in collaboration with the Chief Communications Officer to design and execute special programs and targeted communication to support fundraising and engagement efforts. The timing of this appointment is advantageous. With dynamic leadership in place and the implementation of a strategic plan in process, the Vice President for Advancement is positioned to play a central role in both the near- and long-term future of this singular institution.
The VPA will be an experienced and successful major/principal gift fundraiser with at least 10 years of progressively responsible, hands-on leadership experience in a development program of similar or greater complexity and scope. He or she will resonate with the particular mission and history of the Erikson Institute and demonstrate significant intellectual curiosity, characterized by the ability to translate the work of the faculty and the Institute’s distinctive programs and services to a broad audience. Experience working directly with and managing the activities of a Board of Trustees and other principal gift prospects is required, as is superior strategic ability at the prospect, departmental, and institutional level. Comfort with and the capacity to leverage technology to support a robust and cotemporary approach to outreach and communication will be a particular advantage.
