As Greater Hartford’s communitywide charitable endowment, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is permanently committed to improving the quality of life for residents throughout the region; To achieve this goal, we:
Provide financial and other support that enables people and institutions to serve the community effectively;
Promote informed charitable giving in order to expand the region’s philanthropic resources; and
Participate actively in efforts to identify important community needs and opportunities, as well as the means to address them.
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving seeks a dynamic president to lead one of the country’s oldest community foundations at a critical time in its history and at a pivotal moment for the region. For more than 90 years, the Hartford Foundation has invested in the Greater Hartford Community and helped donors meet their philanthropic goals.
Today, with assets of approximately $900 million, much of which is unrestricted, and annual grants and related program expenditures of more than $35 million, the Hartford Foundation is determined to take an increasingly active leadership role in the region in addressing pressing economic and societal challenges. The Foundation’s influence, independence, and flexibility – as well as its financial resources – position it to be a nimble agent of change. It informs and inspires donors, addresses critical regional needs through its grantmaking, and works “beyond the grants” to leverage its knowledge and influence through collaborations, advocacy, research and communications, and thought leadership.
This is an exciting opportunity to provide vision and leadership to a highly regarded institution poised to move to an even greater level of impact and growth. A new 2016-2018 strategic plan has focused the Foundation on three priority areas – vibrant communities, learning from birth through college, and family economic security. Working with an active eleven-member Board of Directors, 58 staff, and a range of partners, the president will lead the Foundation in pursuit of these goals.
The Foundation is open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds. Candidates should come with a deep knowledge of community and economic development issues (whether in the Hartford region or in other cities); a demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and opportunity; management experience in a complex organization; and experience leading organizational growth and change. The president should be a proven innovator and thought leader with public presence, a record of successful partnerships across diverse constituencies, and a keen grasp of public policy. Senior level volunteer or staff experience in the nonprofit sector is essential and grantmaking and fundraising experience would be an asset.
