ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Princeton in Asia (PiA) is an independent nonprofit organization affiliated with and located at Princeton University with 122 years of history providing immersive experiences in Asia to recent college graduates.  PiA fosters mutual appreciation and cross-cultural understanding between the United States and Asia through immersive work fellowships in host organizations and communities. We aim to contribute to building a world where individuals share a mutual appreciation and respect for the diversity of cultures and perspectives. PiA is the oldest and largest program of its kind, drawing applicants from 170 colleges and universities and boasting a vibrant community of 3000+ committed and engaged alumni across the world.

In the 2019-2020 fellowship year, PiA facilitated 150 year-long fellowship and summer internship opportunities in 20 Asian countries and regions, working in the important global issues of education, public health, environmental sustainability, economic development, and peace, justice and access to information at the local, national and regional levels. PiA is led by an Executive Director, administered by a US-based staff of six (a Deputy Director/Director of Communications, an Advancement Officer, a Senior Program Director, and three Program Directors), governed by an engaged Board of Trustees and supported by an Asia Advisory Council, Alumni Network Chapter Leaders, and Class Ambassadors. PiA has a $9 million portfolio of assets to support its programs and an annual operating budget of approximately $1 million.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Princeton in Asia seeks an experienced and dynamic Director of Advancement to lead all fundraising and alumni engagement efforts. The Director of Advancement will join PiA at a critical moment in its long history, as it works to strengthen and grow the program, broaden and amplify the impact of the institution, and harness the energy and potential of our global community, while centering diversity, equity and inclusion. The Director of Advancement will lead the execution of ambitious fundraising initiatives, enabling PiA to realize its strategic vision, and will develop and oversee a strategy for alumni engagement and communications. This is an outstanding leadership opportunity for a creative, innovative, and experienced leader to partner with PiA leadership to plan, direct, and implement a comprehensive development program that mobilizes the PiA community and works across all channels of fundraising, including annual giving; major gifts; grants; alumni, corporate and institutional relations; and events.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Advancement will provide innovative and strategic leadership for institutional advancement. The Director will be responsible for managing and planning all activities in fundraising, communications, and alumni relations. In close collaboration with the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees, the Director of Advancement will lead an ambitious fundraising campaign to realize PiA’s strategic vision. The Board of Trustees is comprised of talented and deeply engaged individuals with diverse backgrounds, skills, and experiences, who are based across the US and Asia. The Board led the initiation of a major fundraising campaign, which resulted in over $5M in gifts and pledges from PiA leadership in a quiet phase which lasted from 2017-2021. We are now preparing to build on this strong foundation by expanding outreach to the broader PiA family, including over 200 major gift prospects, and by bringing new individual and institutional supporters to PiA.

The Director will lead an Advancement Team consisting of an Advancement Officer, who will support fundraising, and the Director of Communications, who will focus on informing, engaging, and activating the PiA community of Alumni, family and friends. This Advancement Team will receive administrative support for development operations from a part-time Finance Officer/Comptroller. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director, the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees, members of the Asia Advisory Council, and other groups.

The Director must have the desire and ability to build bridges within PiA’s diverse global community and develop new relationships with individuals and institutions who are aligned with PiA’s mission and vision. We are committed to recruiting candidates who center diversity, equity, and inclusion in their leadership and strongly encourage candidates from marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds and identities to apply.

Key responsibilities include advancement strategy, fundraising, team leadership and management, development policy and operations, communications, alumni relations, and learning, relationship-building and representation.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for the Director of Advancement position has a deep dedication to the mission of PiA and an ability to articulate the importance and value of the work. At least 10 years of hands-on development experience is critical, including a proven track record of success in major gifts fundraising, campaign management, and institutional relationship-building and grants. The ability to both create strategy as well as execute on development plans and the operations must be evident, and experience fundraising in Asia and/or working with Asian donors is preferred. The Director of Advancement will be a superior communicator, both in spoken and written word, and possess the ability to craft eloquent, effective and appropriate correspondence quickly and in high stakes environments.

The leadership profile of the ideal candidate encompasses outstanding interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact with integrity with all internal and external stakeholders, including high net worth individuals, executives, academic figures, as well as the staff and the Board. This leader must demonstrate the ability to engage, motivate and steward volunteers, while also exhibiting strong management experience and a dedication to the growth and development of team members and staff.

Prior experience working on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism initiatives in advancement is preferred, and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning in the field is critical. The Director of Advancement moreover must show excellent judgment, professionalism and a strong sense of integrity and accountability.
